Skin Diseases: Pyoderma

Pyoderma literally means “pus in the skin” and can be caused by infectious, inflammatory, and/or neoplastic etiologies.

Most commonly, however, pyoderma refers to bacterial infections of the skin.

Pyoderma

Pyoderma is caused by bacterial infection of the skin. The causative organism is almost always Staphylococcus intermedius (not the same Staph that usually infects people).

Bacteria will not usually cause disease on normal skin, but other underlying skin diseases cause some changes in the skin surface making it susceptible to infection.
