Glucocorticoids, such as prednisone, will do a great job controlling inflammation or suppressing the immune system when needed.

Unfortunately, this class of medications also has a long list of potential side-effects, including increased thirst and urination, dull and dry fur, weight gain, panting, vomiting, diarrhea, elevated liver enzymes, pancreatitis, gastrointestinal ulceration, diabetes mellitus,  and muscle wasting.
