Blastomycosis

Blastomycosis is a systemic fungal infection caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis, an organism that grows in rotting wood and wet soil.

The infection is seen most often in large breed male dogs, and especially in hunting dogs, sporting breeds, and dogs that spend a lot of time in environments where the Blastomyces organism exists.

Geography Matters with Blastomycosis

Veterinarians in blasto-endemic areas should be familiar with the disease and have it towards the top of their rule-out lists for dogs with characteristic symptoms. If, however, you have recently moved from or traveled to one of these areas and your dog gets sick, be sure to tell your vet. This information is critical if your dog is to benefit from a prompt and accurate diagnosis and avoid potentially life threatening delays in treatment.

Blastomycosis in Dogs

Blastomycosis, caused by Blastomyces dermatitidis, is a systemic fungal infection.

It appears in only certain geographic areas in North America, most often the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, Tennessee, and St. Lawrence River valleys.

Infection with Blastomyces occurs when a dog inhales the fungal spores into the lungs.
